Messob

Hello there !!!

I am coming back with a very original restaurant !!! Messob is an Ethiopian restaurant. They don’t have knife and fork and you must eat all dishes with your hands using Ethiopian crepes called injeras. This is really exotic. Before starting, you can taste a special cocktail called Adis-Abeba, it is prepared with champagne, pineapple and blackberries. If you are coming for the first time, I advise you to order a discover set for tasting everything. The choice of Mehaberawi seems to be very good.  This set contains doro wot (chicken served with eggs and marinated with a delicious onion sauce and spices ), minchet abish (beef tartare marinated with garlic, ginger and peppers), azifa (lentil salad seasoned with fine herbs), gomen (collard greens and ginger), selata (kind of salad prepared with  chopped tomatoes, onions and green chili in oil and lemon dressing), misir (spicy lentils). As other main dishes, I suggest also Tibs (chopped beef marinated with onions, tomatoes and fine herbs or for vegetarian people Kari Seneg (pepers filing with shallots and tomatoes).

You can also tyr a fresh local beer for accompagny your dinner. On the prices side, for a good and exotic dinner, the bill will be approximately 15-30 euros.

Le Caveau

Hello everybody!!!

Today, we are coming back to restaurants with local specialties and we are in "le caveau". It is a sweet restaurant in the heart of Lyon city with a covered outdoor area. The greeting is good.
You can order a menu including one starter, one main course and one desert. As starter, I suggest you "salade chevre chaud sur lit de pommes" (salad with local goat cheese served with hot apples) or tete de veau à la sauce gribiche (mock turtle served with vinaigrette sauce with chopped boiled eggs, herbs and capers) or “grenouilles persillées” frogs with chopped parsley).
Among main dishes, I really liked "fricassée d'agneau à la provencale" (lamb stew with vegetables) , "langue de boeuf" (beef tongue with spicy sauce) , "foie de veau" (calf liver) and quenelles (a typical Lyon specialties).
As deserts, I really suggest you to order a "tarte à la praline", I always take this desert in this restaurant.

On the prices side, I have written for 3 menus, their prices are 13.50, 15 and 17 euros. If you take a pitcher of wine, it costs 8-10 euros.

Bon appetit !!!

Café Léon

Hello !!!

Today, we are travelling through Spain and eating good Tapas. However, we are in the heart of Lyon city in Café Léon.
The decoration is sweet and the greeting is really good. It is a ideal place for taking a drink accompanied with tapas in a patio from Andalusia or in a saloon from Madrid. The music is also very sweet.
Among tapas, I suggest you gambas, tortillas, marinated peppers and spicy chicken. They were excellent. You can also taste their Paella !
For accompagny your meal, you can order a fresh Spanish beer or they have also beers from South America.
They have also Spanish wines which are good.
On the prices side, if you drink a beer and eat 2-3 tapas, the check will be around 10-15 Euros. You pay less money if you go there with your friends, order tapas for sharing and take a pitcher of beer.

Bon appétit !!!

L'Epicerie

Hello there !
Today, I am especially writing for students and young people or the people who feel younger :)
We are in l'Epicerie where you can eat excellent slice of bread (tartine) and taste delicious soups in winter.
The decoration is from 1960's and really sweet and the staff always smiling. If you can, I really suggest you sit near the stove on the bench. Among tartines, I especially suggest the "tartine à la fourme d'Ambert à la prune " (slice of bread with hot goat cheese and plum). The tartine with goat cheese and honey was also really good.
Among cold tartines, that with salmon fish was excellent, there was also a sauce with that but I can not remember the composition. To accompagny your tartine , you can order a drink among the large selection. They have very original beers, I have tried one beer from Alsace. They have also different  mulled wines which are very originals. And I have tried two drink called chouchen made with honey and "kir royal" made with violet. Among deserts, I suggest home made pies, they seem to be delicious, unfortunately, I could not try all :)  but only I have ordered a raspberry pie;)
On the side prices, L'epicerie is an excellent place. You can eat and drink (it depends also how much you drink) for 10 Euros. If you are there for the lunch, the have a formule for  9.50 euros.
Bon appétit

Bistro Pizay

Hello there !
At lunch, we have been in a local restaurant, "Bistro Pizay" where we have eaten very well. The decoration was swetty and the service was good. We have ordered  two menus, each menu includes one starter, one main course and one desert. As starter, artichokes with garlic mayonnaise sauce and smoked salmon served with patatos and carrots were excellent. As main dishes, I really suggest roasted lamb ribbs marinated with wild thyme served with season vegetables. The duo of goatfish and codfish in their "foie gras" sauce and served with pumpkin was very original and good. To finish our lunch, we have ordered one brownie and one "creme brulée". The deserts were acceptable but no exceptional, maybe, they can make an effort for the presentation  of deserts.
Bistro Pizay is not expansive. We have paid 13 euros for a menu and 8 euros for a pitcher of white wine, taking into account the quality of dishes, this is an excellent price. I suggest this restaurant, Bon appétit.

The Salmon Shop

Hello there !!!
Today, we are in "The Salmon Shop". And I'll let you guess what's for dinner ? :)
The salmon shop, located in city center, is a great place  where you can taste salmon fish or other seafood in all forms with all-you-can-eat chips.  I especially suggest you their salmon steak or salmon escalope with leeks. The home-made smoked salmon or salmon lasagna are also very good. If you want to taste something really original, you can order one fresh wood buffulo steak tartar. As deserts, you can order a apple crumble or a brownie. On the prices side, the salmon shop is cheap. You can order a dish with all- you -can -eat chips (don't forget that all dishes are served with a carot salad as starter) and a desert and the costs will be around 15-19 euros. This restaurant is perfect for students. The atmosphere is great and the service is good. Booking is suggested especially on saturdays.
Bon appétit !

Lyon-Dakar

Hello there !
Today, We are travelling through Senegal ! Lyon-Dakar is a nice restaurant  for tasting Senegalese Kitchen!
I must say that the greeting and the quality of service are great. The owner of the restaurant is a very nice person and he gives advice with a detailed explanation of all dishes.  Before starting your dinner, I suggest you to order exotic coctails,  I especially like them to be prepared with ginger. As starter, you can taste cod-fish or meat pastries. As main dishes, maaffe beef (tomato and peanut butter sauce) or yassa fish (simmered in onion with a garlic, mustard, and lemon sauce)  are excellent. If you want to taste something really original and good, you can take Thiéboudienne (marinated fish cooked with tomato paste and a variety of vegetables). It is the national dish of Senegal. In Lyon-Dakar, you have the choice of French wines but I advise you to try a fresh Senegalese beer to accompany your dinner. As deserts, You can take the oven-baked banana or pineapple flambée with rhum. On the  prices side, Lyon-Dakar is not expensive. You can order a menu (starter, main course, desert) for 15-22 euros. A nice dinner with a fresh beer will cost around 20-25 euros.

Pizzeria Carlino

Today, I would to write about Pizzeria Carlino where you can taste really delicious pizza and other italian dishes. The menu is simple and there is no formule, then you must take all dishes "a la carte".
Among different delicious pizzas, I suggest Carlino special, Salmon Pizza, Vegeterian Pizza. As typical italian dishes, you have to try "Escalope Marsala " or "Escalope milanese" . Among Pastas, their lasagna is delicious as well as their spaghetti bolognese. You can order an italian wine to accompagny your dinner. They have a good choice of italian wine but also french wine (draft wine is also avaible). Among deserts, Tiramisu is good and the panna cotta is excellent.
In this restaurant, there is a really italian atmospher, and sometimes it is litlle bit tense between the personel who are- I think- a family . The decor is little old. However, the service is OK.
Pizzeria Carlino is not expansive, you can eat with wine for 17-24 euros. And I think that Carlino is one of the best pizzerias in Lyon.
Buon Apetito !

Brasserie Georges

How I can not write about Brasserie Georges in a blog on Lyon restaurants ! On the one hand, this restaurant in one of the historical monument in Lyon and on the other hand we eat there very well ! Sure, I must talk about their excellent home-made beer and the quality of service. I have been in this restaurant several times and I have appreciated every delicious dishes. For starting, as cold starter, you can taste their home maid "foie gras" or fresh salmon tarter, as hot starter, onion soup with egg yolk and madeir sauce  or marrow bone with crunchy guerande salt seem to be perfect or if you are open -minded, you can try snails, as myself, I like them :)
Among main dishes, fully seasoned steak tartare prepared at your table or Bresse Poultry stuffed with "foie gras" or Duck breast cooked in honey and spices are my favorites. Their Saukreat dishes are also very famous if you want to try. If you'are always hungry, you can order one of their deserts. Baked Alaska flambée is great but served only for two people, floatting island and french creme caramel are also good.
Among beverages, you must try their beer before starting or during your dinner. They have a good choice of wine, I suggest especially Crozes Hermitages or St-Joseph.
On the price side, for excellent meats they serve , the prices seem to be not excessif. You have also the choice to take menus made of up one starter, one main course and a desert but of course  the choice will be limited.
With wine, the check will be around 25-40 euros. However, if you are not very hungry and with a limited budget, you can order only one main course with draft  wine, in this case, you will pay around 15-20 euros. The detail of prices and dishes are avaible at their website : http://www.brasseriegeorges.com/.
Bon appétit !

Le Laurencin

Today, I am writing on "Le Laurencin ", a typical Lyon restaurant located in the Old City. First of all, the portions are very big, As far as I'm concerned, I could not finish my menu (one starter, a main course and desert). You have a lot of choice concerning starters and main dishes. As starter, "terrine de lapin (rabbit terrine)" is correct and and "museau de boeuf (muzzle of beef)" really good. I tried the calf's liver with wine sauce and served with "gratin dauphinois" . It was really good, I can suggest also the lamb "souris d'agneau" served with rice. As desert, their profiterol is not only a profiterol but a mountain covered by the snow :)
I suggest also "tarte tatin (cake with cooked apples) and "tarte à la praline" a local desert. Le laurencin is not expansive, the menu with a starter, main course and desert costs approximately 15 Euros. You have the choice of wine but it is possible also order a pitcher of draft wine which also acceptable. With wine, the check is about 20 Euros per person. The service is quick and the personnal is smiley. However, during crowd's moments, you have to wait a little for having a table.

Carnegie Hall

Today, I would like to write about one of the my favorite's restaurant, Carnegie Hall. First of all, this post is for the people who like the red meat. For you, this restaurant is a must-not-to-miss  !!!
Every meat is delicious, my favorites are "cote du boeuf (beef ribs)" and "entrecote à la sauce échalotte (back ribs with shallot sauce)". The meat is of excellent quality, the choice of wine is limited but they have one or two good bottles and the draft wine is quite acceptable. You can order all kind of meats but the beef is recommended because they are specialists. If you want to try something original, you can  order "tartare de boeuf (fresh made beef tartare)"  Among deserts, I suugest that you taste "tarte tatin" and "tarte à la praline".
The decoration is simple.
For the quality of meats, I find that Carnegie Hall is not expansive. You can have a meal with wine for 20-25 Euros (27-40$ or 17-20£). The portions are big, then , having a starter at the beginning is not really required.

Bleu de toi

Welcome to the fisherman's hut located in Lyon center  ! First of all, Bleu de toi has an amazing decoration. We ate there last week. The restaurant is located in "la rue Mercière"  a bustling pedestrian street where there is a lot of restaurants.  The welcome was OK and the staff was smiley but the tables were very close together. In "Bleu de toi" , they have a great choice of mussels and fish.  The dinner started with a salad, the taste was OK but I did not understand why they serve always a  simple salad. After that , we ate delicious "moules marinières" ,mussels cooked in their own juice with white wine and shallots. At another time, I tried also "moules farcies", mussels stuffed with garlic and parsly sauce and it was really delicious. They serve all kind of mussels with all-you-can-eat french fries. Their fishes are also really good, the filet of salmon especially. For deserts, their crepes were excellent. I tried the "crepe au marron" and I suggest it.
Concerning the prices, Bleu de toi is not expansive even cheep. You can have a dinner for 14 Euros (19$; 11£) . They have a special menu for lunch for 10.90 Euros (salad, mussel or fish and desert.)

Auberge Rabelais

Auberge Rabelais is a typical French local restaurant called "bouchon" located in Old City. I visited it several times. It is a good place for dining with friends but also for a romantic dinner. The decoration is traditional like a hostel and very sweet (auberge means hostel in French).
I  tried different meals called "menu or formula" in there. Among starters, the onion soup ,the rabbit terrine, salade with cheese (au chevre chaud) were very good. I liked also their Carpaccio and I can suggest it even though it is not a French meal :)
Among main courses, I found very delicious the lamb served with a selection of season vegetables. The chicken was also pretty good. You can also taste delicious "quenelles au brochet" served with rice.
Among deserts, I  tried their floating island, it was OK but I really suggest their "fondant au chocolat à la crème anglaise", it is a delight :) Absolutely, you must try it.
They have a large selection of wine and you have also the possibility to order a "pitcher" (draft wine).
At the beginning, we have taken one bottle of "croze hermitages"  and for finishing our local cheese called St-Marcelin, we have ordered one pitcher of St Joseph (in Lyon, kindly rare to find St Joseph as draft wine in a pitcher).
Auberge Rabelais is not expansive, you can have a dinner with cold or hot starter, main course and desert for about 20 Euros (27$ or 17£). If you add the wine (one bottle of Cotes du Rhone) for two people), the check per person will be approximately 25-30 Euros.

Bon appetit !

Eat in Lyon : New Blog about restaurants in Lyon

Hello !
Welcome to  new Lyon restaurants guide. My name is Nail (yes, like Nail :))   and I live in Lyon for 10 years.
I like eating out and,  in 10 years, I have tried a lot of restaurants, as well as french restaurants and others. Now, I decided to share my experience with you. On the internet, there are many web sites in French with the same purpose but this is not the case for websites in English. Although I know that my English is not perfect,  this is the reason why this blog came into the existence. I am going to publish on this website only my own ideas and maybe you won't share them :(
I hope you enjoy your surf :)
I am waiting for your comments and suggestions !
See you
